Mesothelioma, or Malignant Mesothelioma, is a rare form of cancer that is found the thin linings of the body’s organs, particularly the lungs. The only known cause of mesothelioma is asbestos exposure.
Diagnosing mesothelioma can be difficult and time-consuming. A number of illnesses and diseases can resemble mesothelioma, which makes its diagnosis increasingly difficult. Generally, patients with mesothelioma do not demonstrate any symptoms of the disease until 20 to 50 years after being exposed to asbestos dust.
The symptoms of mesothelioma can take time to develop and show. Many times a person who has been exposed to asbestos in the past will not know that they have the disease because of the subtlety of the early symptoms. Some patients do not experience any symptoms at all. Because of this, mesothelioma can go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for too long. By the time a person is finally diagnosed, treatment has already become difficult.
